Heading Checker
How the Heading Checker Works
Paste in any public URL and we fetch the page, pull out every heading from H1 through H6, and audit the whole structure. You get a visual heading tree, a letter grade from A to F, and a list of findings grouped by severity.
The audit runs 16 structural and content checks covering things like missing or duplicate H1s, empty headings, length problems, skipped hierarchy levels, and generic phrasing.
Add a focus keyword and the audit gains three keyword targeting checks on top of the structural ones. Optional, but worth doing.
You can also compare your H1 against the top five Google results for your focus keyword, which shows you exactly what the pages currently ranking chose to write. And if your H1 needs work, the AI rewrite option returns three alternatives built around your keyword and your actual page outline.
Single mode handles one URL. Bulk mode processes a list at once and gives you a sortable table of grades.
Reading Your Results
The Grade rolls up how many issues were found and how serious they are. An A means clean. An F means at least one high severity problem, usually a missing H1, multiple H1s, or a broken hierarchy.
The Heading Tree shows every heading on the page in document order, indented by level. This is the fastest way to spot a skipped level, where an H2 jumps straight to an H4 with nothing in between.
The Findings Panel groups issues by severity so you know what to fix first. High severity items are worth handling today. Info level items are nice to clean up eventually.
The SERP Comparison puts your H1 side by side with the H1s of the pages currently ranking. Instead of guessing whether your heading is good, you can see what's working.
Common Questions
Why does the H1 matter so much?
The H1 is the top level heading of your page and usually the main title a visitor sees. It tells both readers and search engines what the page is about in a single line. Search engines weigh it heavily when deciding which queries a page is relevant for. A clear H1 that matches your target keyword can meaningfully improve rankings. A vague, off topic, or missing one leaves signal on the table for no reason.
Can I have more than one H1?
Technically yes, and Google has said multiple H1s don't directly hurt rankings. In practice a single clear H1 is still the right call. It makes your topic unmistakable, it's better for screen reader users who get one clear page announcement, and it matches how most themes are built. This tool flags multiple H1s as a warning rather than an error, so you can decide whether it's intentional or a theme bug.
Should my H1 match my title tag?
They should say the same thing about the topic without being word for word identical. Your title tag is built for click through from search results: 50 to 60 characters, keyword forward, often with your brand on the end. Your H1 is what people read after they land: it can run a bit longer, sound more conversational, and skip the brand. Both should answer “what is this page about” using the same keyword phrasing.
How long should an H1 be?
There's no hard limit, but under 70 characters is the practical target. It reads better as a title, it won't wrap awkwardly on mobile, and the constraint forces you to be precise. The audit flags anything over 70 as a warning. Anything under 20 gets flagged as too short since it's rarely descriptive enough.
